Lucy Murphy, The Daisy Garland and The Ketogenic Diet
The Ketogenic Diet was first developed in the 1920’s at The Johns Hopkins University Hospital in Baltimore, USA. It is a mathematically calculated doctor-supervised diet which alters the body’s chemistry by simulating the metabolism of a fasting body.
The diet is high in fat and low in protein and carbohydrate, and is formulated to sustain the state of ketosis within the body. Ketosis occurs when the body principally burns fat instead of the more common energy source, carbohydrate. Ketones (the ash or residue left after the fat is burned) are concentrated in the blood and inhibit seizures. The Ketogenic Diet is a recognised and accepted therapy for children with hard to control, drug resistant epilepsy, and is recommended as a treatment in the NICE (National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence) Guidelines. Trials have been run at Great Ormond Street Hospital with great success.
Sadly, due to lack of NHS funding, this diet is not widely available in the UK. To date we have funded 6 ‘Daisy Garland Ketogenic Dieticians’, with more planned to follow.
The Daisy Garland funded dietitian Alison Hill has been working with Lucy Murphy and her family in Devon.
You can help!
The Daisy Garland is a family-run, registered charity. We work incredibly hard, raising funds in order to place our 'Daisy Garland Ketogenic Dieticians' countrywide. We have no overheads or expenses, so every penny goes directly to helping children with epilepsy.
Every donation is gratefully received and if you Gift Aid your donation we receive a further 28p for every £1 you donate. Gift Aid forms are available here.
