What we do

The Daisy Garland charity was set up in November 2004 to keep Daisy's memory alive and to help other little children like her.

We fund an increasing number of Ketogenic Dietitians who work in National Health Hospitals treating hundreds of children with intractable epilepsy.

We are the only charity funding full-time Ketogenic Dietitians working within NHS hospitals nationwide - each dietitian costs up to £47,000 per annum. If you think you could help us fund our next Daisy Garland Ketogenic Dietitian go to HOW YOU CAN HELP. Be in touch today.

Epilepsy affects 1 in every 100 children in the UK

Olivia's (Livi's) Story

GLUT1 Syndrome is an extremely rare genetic condition, which results in a person being unable to transport glucose to the brain. Livi Wallis has GLUT1, she lives in Cardiff with her mum, dad and younger brother Bailey, and is under the care of our Daisy Garland Ketogenic Dietitian in Bristol.  Here is Livi’s story.

Born in January 2009 to adoring parents, Livi had the best start a baby could possibly have.  17 months later with the birth of baby Bailey the Rees family was complete, but it was around this time that things started to go wrong.  Livi was a late walker and unsteady on her feet, at 20 months old her parents noticed Livi making strange little movements with her head and hands.  Medical advice was sought, specialist appointments made, but no satisfactory diagnosis was reached.  In 2012 Livi was diagnosed with epilepsy and prescribed anticonvulsant medication.  More anxious months passed and a series of tests and a lumber puncture finally showed that Livi had GLUT1DS. The Rees family were put in touch with a Daisy Garland Ketogenic Dietitian and one week later Livi started the ketogenic diet.  Within two weeks Livi was completely seizure free. This is what Laura has to say about the ketogenic diet -

‘’The Ketogenic diet has completely controlled Livi’s seizures and we are now able to do things we have never done before.  We go on long family days out and appreciate life to the full with our wonderful daughter.  The Daisy Garland fund Livi’s ketogenic dietitian, as there is no NHS funding available to treat her on this diet.  Without their support I don’t know what we would have done.”   Laura, Livi’s mum
