What we do

The Daisy Garland charity was set up in November 2004 to keep Daisy's memory alive and to help other little children like her.

We fund an increasing number of Ketogenic Dietitians who work in National Health Hospitals treating hundreds of children with intractable epilepsy.

We are the only charity funding full-time Ketogenic Dietitians working within NHS hospitals nationwide - each dietitian costs up to £47,000 per annum. If you think you could help us fund our next Daisy Garland Ketogenic Dietitian go to HOW YOU CAN HELP. Be in touch today.

Ben's Story

Four-year-old Ben was diagnosed with ‘Doose Syndrome’, having up to 400 seizures a day. Despite taking four anticonvulsant drugs, Ben fell down the stairs unconscious and fitting, resulting in a nasty head injury and a broken leg. Ben’s worsening drug resistant epilepsy forced him to wear a helmet during waking hours to protect his head - he was so poorly he could barely walk 50 yards.

Losing much of his speech and cognition he spent most of his time sleeping. After learning about the ketogenic diet from a Daisy Garland leaflet picked up at their local hospital, Ben’s mum Juliet began some serious research. In June 2012 Ben started the ketogenic diet under the care of Jane Davison, our Daisy Garland Ketogenic Dietitian at The Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham. The diet was so effective that within a month they were able to wean Ben’s first drug. In February 2013, a week after weaning his final drug Ben was seizure free, and has remained so ever since. No helmet, no seizures, no drugs and no further need for the ketogenic diet!

Ben is thriving. He came off the diet last May and still remains seizure and drug free. He is also now exceeding all his targets for his age at school as well as riding a bike and swimming. He is also enjoying Beavers like all normal 6 year olds. This story would be very different if it had not been for The Daisy Garland and the ketogenic diet.
