What we do

The Daisy Garland charity was set up in November 2004 to keep Daisy’s memory alive and to help other little children like her.

We fund an increasing number of Ketogenic Dietitians who work in National Health Hospitals treating hundreds of children with intractable epilepsy.

Joni's Story

13 year-old Joni was diagnosed with epilepsy when she was a baby. Her mum, Debbie, tells us about their incredible journey following brain surgery… and the ketogenic diet!

“Joni was almost 6-months-old when she was diagnosed with epilepsy and has been prescribed every AED possible, not one of them controlled Joni’s seizures.She underwent brain surgery in 2010 and her seizures reduced over the next two years. Unfortunately in 2012 herseizures returned, the worst episode lasting a gruelling 18 hours. We must have had 40 ambulances at our house during the summer of 2012.

Medication after medication was pumped into Joni’s little body but nothing worked. We were at our wits end!

Joni started the ketogenic diet in August 2013 under Vicki Whiteley, a Daisy Garland Ketogenic Dietician at the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital. The results have been amazing! The diet allowed us to reduce some of Joni’s medication and after 18 months we were able to wean the diet. Joni’s doing great, enjoying swimming and socializing with her friends. Her quality of life and overall health have improved massively.

At long last, I’ve got my girl back! We are so grateful to The Daisy Garland for making this possible. I often wonder how things would have been had we tried the diet before brain surgery!”
