When things are at their darkest, when everything is overwhelming and the path you are on is lonely and frightening The Daisy Garland provides knowledge, advice, support and friendship as you navigate your drug-resistant epilepsy journey. Right from the beginning when we started the ketogenic diet, they provided the most amazing welcome box full of everything we would need to begin. The online support from Sara, David and the entire team is fantastic, and they are always quick to answer questions, offer advice and provide recipe ideas! "We found The Daisy Garland through a colleague in 2017 when we were devastated by a rapid onset of seizures that saw us hospitalised for months on end feeling lonely and not knowing which way to turn. In those dark early morning hours they were the support I needed to get through the hell that had unleashed on our lives. Sara was always at the end of my messages listening and supporting me. When we went onto keto the community of parents and help advice and support was unwavering. We also benefited from a SATs monitor which for over 3 years ensured we were alert to the devastating seizures and I’m sure saved our son’s life on more than one occasion. "Sshhhh… shouldn’t have a favourite charity BUT we do! We can’t even begin to comprehend the pain that loosing beautiful Daisy caused her family. But what a special little girl she was and still is. Charlie … my first grandchild was my pride and joy. He made my heart sing. So when epilepsy affected him we were devastated. Only people directly affected by childhood epilepsy fully understand the never ending anxiety. We all have different journeys but have all been supported in so many ways by this wonderful charity. Charlie’s night time monitor kept him safe and meant that my daughter and son in law could snatch some sleep. We all know that sleep is over rated !! but it helped with the stress and hospital visits and paramedics and ambulances. To have received a sats monitor to provide overnight monitoring for Jack, who has difficult to control epilepsy was amazing and we consider ourselves very fortunate. The sleep gained from the reassurance of the monitor has been life changing. To know we can sort Jack straight away when it alarms has given so much peace of mind. As the years have gone on, it's more than just having the peace of mind we can react to the alarm when it sounds, it's ensured we more accurately monitor the seizures which may have otherwise been missed overnight, it's ensuring we can provide first aid if needed, it's enabled us to be more proactive as it alarms... so can quickly get the urine bottle rather than Jack need a shower and the bed need a full bed strip down and clean. You have personally supported my family for 11 years now - when my son first started the ketogenic diet to try and reduce his seizures. We instantly went from feeling alone, bewildered, overwhelmed and very uninformed to feeling part of one big connected family. We learned sooooo much about epilepsy, medication and diet. "Happy birthday In Jan 2017 my 3 year old boy's world was shattered! He had a tonic clonic seizure In The middle of the post office out of the blue. He was diagnosed with complex generalised epilepsy. Seizures came thick and fast day and night! The Daisy Garland was there for us in our darkest days! They provided my son with a seizure monitor for under his mattress and meaning we could get a wink of sleep knowing it would alert us! The Daisy Garland did more than that though! "We can’t thank Sara, David and the Daisy Garland team enough for the most amazing gift that they gave our family. Our son Jack was diagnosed with Lissencephaly (smooth brain) when he was 5 months old. As with most brain conditions, this one is accompanied by medical resistant epilepsy. We were advised that Jack’s development would be severely delayed, but it was absolutely heartbreaking to see any tiny achievement undone by his seizure activity. At 4 years old, Jack rarely smiled. And then we were told about the Ketogenic diet and introduced to The Daisy Garland who funded the wonderful dietician, Nicol Clayton, who provided advice, encouragement and invaluable support. Within a short space of time, the diet worked its magic, Jack’s seizure activity reduced significantly and he didn’t just smile, he giggled! Imagine the reward of joyous, heart warming giggles delivered unconditionally by a toddler who is thrilled by the splashing of water in his bath. Imagine how incredible that is for parents to hear after 4 years of trying with immense difficulty to accept that this would never be possible. Jack is now 17. "When my daughter was 1 years old my life was turned upside down as she was diagnosed with epilepsy. I slept on her bedroom floor for 2 years until I was introduced to The Daisy Garland who kindly provided my daughter with a monitor. After that I had more peace of mind so I was able to sleep in my own bed knowing the alarm would alert me if my daughter needed me. My daughter now has drug resistant epilepsy, inoperable, and has many more complex medical needs. She is part of the Daisy Garland Green Shoots project and really enjoys participating. We were absolutely terrified about what it would mean for our family and felt so isolated both in terms of a lack of local support but also the pandemic preventing much needed family support. When we finally stumbled across Sara and The Daisy Garland it honestly felt like they scooped us up, gave us a massive hug and helped us to bravely step forwards with a glimmer of hope that we could manage this life changing diagnosis. "Happy 20th Birthday The Daisy Garland In 2017 our world was turned upside down when a 2.5 month old Nola started having seizures. A month later she received a probable diagnosis of Tuberous Sclerosis Complex and we were told it was likely she would have refractory epilepsy. After gaining control of seizures for relatively short periods of time we eventually enrolled on the KIWE trial a few months before Nola turned 2. We received our Daisy Garland starter kit before going in to hospital which was just wonderful, all the essentials to get started on the ketogenic diet! Having doubts and worries I would read posts on The Daisy Garland Facebook page, website and closed Support Group a source of support where I could reach out and ask questions to others on a similar journey. Nola was also granted a SATs monitor some time before starting the keto diet which was a huge reassurance after Nola experienced several non- convulsive status seizures. "I love TDG dearly and always will! I think we were taken under caring Daisy's umbrella some10 years ago (Isabelle is now 14y). The Daisy Garland charity was suggested to us by another charity after waiting for some months, on their list, for the epilepsy monitor. We received Isabelle's monitor very quickly from TDG. But then I found something else, something that saved me, my sanity. You were the very first and only people who knew exactly what having uncontrolled epilepsy meant to children and to their mothers and offered your full understanding and support through your own experience and all available knowledge that was up there. We had no medical or any other professional at that time (or any one else really) who had acknowledged and accepted my fear, the seriousness of condition, who'd properly explained diagnosis and treatments as well as reassured that they will do everything they possibly can to help and save Isabelle. "In 2015 our lives changed when our daughter started having seizures when she was just 17 weeks old, we were on this rollercoaster but in 2016 when our daughter was diagnosed with Dravet syndrome, our world just seem to crumble around us. When the hospital said they wanted to try the Ketogenic diet, we did not have a clue but with the help of the dietitian and the hospital putting us in touch with The Daisy Garland, it was a game charger, from the Welcome Box to a listening ear from Sara and her team, and being added to the facebook page of the daisy garland Keto Cafe was priceless. The Daisy Garland also provide life saving sats monitors, which has definitely helped alert us to my daughter's seizures but also helped me to get some very much needed zzzz. Daisy Garland also work hard to get to get money off deals for keto-friendly food, as we all know keto food can be very expensive. The Daisy Garland regularly put up giveaways of new keto food to try or accessories for the kitchen. During covid, The Daisy Garland put on some online Mindfulness classes with the amazing Gillian Higgins, to say they were a life saver for my own mental health is no exaggeration. Since then I have had the privilege to go on Daisy Garland Mindfulness retreats, which has been amazing, I have met so many wonderful people, who I know will be friends for life. Just talking to people who understand makes such a difference and you don't feel so alone. Also another great opportunity The Daisy Garland has provided was the Green Shoots project, which has involved all 3 of my daughters, which has been amazing for them to do together. "What The Daisy Garland means for me in one word? HOPE. Anna is on the keto diet much over 10 years and it save her life. There was a time when she had 10 different seizures daily. Anna isn’t seizure free (she has 2-3 fits every month) and she is still on 3 medicines. But the ketogenic diet plays a significant part in her improved condition. "Sara and the Daisy Garland Charity have been supporting us for over 7 years now. I remember first contacting them when we were having frequent and prolonged seizures and didn’t know where else to turn. I was scared but they helped more than they’ll ever know. I decided not to apply for a bed alarm as I thought there would be other families who would need it more. My daughter then was ventilated after a 2 hour seizure at 11 months and we received the dravet syndrome diagnosis. The Daisy team were brilliant, supporting us, sending a bear and goodies for her and checking in during the early dark days - providing us with a bed alarm quickly when I realised we did in fact need it to allow us to function - which still, 7 years later alerts us to nocturnal seizures. I had hoped we wouldn’t need the alarm and perhaps the epilepsy would go away - slightly naive but an understandable feeling. The alarm itself, undoubtedly saved her life during a 48 min seizure where she had respiratory arrest - without it there is a good chance we may not have woken and she wouldn’t be with us. It gives us peace of mind and lets us sleep. The work the charity do is outstanding and truly life saving. They are always on hand to give emotional support, they have run Mindfulness courses and also provide wonderful messages of support through their Facebook page. They know firsthand how cruel and dangerous drug-resistant epilepsy can be and have created a wonderful charity whilst remembering beautiful Daisy. Thank you for your on going support. "Happy 20th birthday! We have so much to say about the Daisy Garland Charity and how wonderful and awesome it is! Firstly, a huge thanks to the team who work endlessly to help children / young people! We really do appreciate it! We have to take a moment to think about Daisy and her family too. We are in awe of your strength, a beacon of support and light when those clouds form. Our journey is nearly 8 years in. 23rd October 2019 is a very special day for us, it was the day we reached out to Sara and her team, desperate for help - sick of medications / combo fails - more meds/ more seizures… everything was out of control. The team gifted us a monitor as we just didn’t sleep. Which we continue to use every night and is probably one of the most looked after items in our home (it was gifted by Teddy’s family - thank you so much). The support we had for nearly 3 years on the keto diet was amazing! The advice, guidance and support helped us to navigate a whole life style change. I can honestly say it was the best change and give us some respite from the medication roundabout! I do think we are still seeing the magic, even though we’ve weaned off. I think we will revisited the diet in the future and see our wean as a ‘break only’. We have learnt so much from the speaking to others, listening to peoples lived experiences and seeing how others manage tricky situations related to this journey. Things are still tricky here but I can honestly say that we would not been in a brighter position had we not stumbled across the Daisy Garland charity. "A very happy and well deserved 20th anniversary to all at The Daisy Garland. A few years ago, I reluctantly reached out to you for some advice about night time monitors for my son Will. He had gone into his new home, supported by the most wonderful team of people I could dream of but they needed some extra reassurance at night time, managing his seizures. I merely asked a question about which monitor they would recommend. Within an hour, I had heard from Karen. She advised me first and foremost about what was available then went on to say that they would fund it for him. To say I was completely blown away by this is an understatement. For 25 years we have managed every bit of care and support our precious boy needed and not once did we ask for anything. This came out of the blue and, turns out, it was simply fantastic. Will had a monitor in a matter of weeks with minimal fuss. His night times got much less stressful for the staff in his house. How wonderful to have that support. We could not thank them enough for the peace of mind their gift of better sleep gave us all. My beautiful boy sadly passed away a few years ago. Epilepsy really is the worst thing. Throughout all of that horrendous time for us as a family, The Daisy Garland was there for us. We were never far from their thoughts and prayers. We felt their love then and now. Always. I hope they are able to help children, their families and loved ones for many years to come with their vital knowledge and respect for all things epilepsy. You're simply incredible.
